What the Critics Are Saying...

PC Pro

All this is a bit of a shame, because the ViewPad 7 does have some potential. For on thing, full access to the Android Market, plus built in 3G, GPS for that big-screen satnav experience, and good build and design. It's far from the worst Android tablet we've encountered. But the niggles I have ment...

The ViewSonic ViewPad 7 delivers Android 2.2 on a 7-inch screen, with a powerful processor and rear- and front- facing cameras. To wrap up, the ViewSonic ViewPad 7 is cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Tab, and rightly so as it can't really compete with it on any other point. The 7-inch screen is a nice size, but other than that it fails to present the user with a pleasant experience as far as resolution and viewing angles...

ViewSonic's ViewPad 7 Android tablet looks good, is fairly well built and has plenty of features, not to mention a great case. However, it's seriously let down by its uncomfortable shape, slow 600MHz processor and a low-resolution and slightly unresponsive screen.

CNET

The ViewSonic ViewPad 7 is around £130 cheaper than both the 3G iPad and Galaxy Tab, which is a substantial saving. But, while it has a good range of features, its low-resolution screen, relatively slow processor and lack of Flash support mean you'll have to think carefully about whether it me...

For on thing, full access to the Android Market, plus built in 3G, GPS for that big-screen satnav experience, and good build and design. It's far from the worst Android tablet we've encountered. But the niggles I have mentioned combined with inconsistent performance mean ViewSonic's latest offering lags behind the best Android tablets.

The ViewPad 7 offers a solid platform for Android 2.2, but it comes off as an oversize, overpriced smartphone--not a Netbook alternative.

To wrap up, the ViewSonic ViewPad 7 is cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Tab, and rightly so as it can't really compete with it on any other point. The 7-inch screen is a nice size, but other than that it fails to present the user with a pleasant experience as far as resolution and viewing angles go. Sadly, this makes the ViewSonic ViewPad 7 pretty uncomfortable for watching movies or simply using the tablet in certain positions. That said, the ViewPad 7 is still a nice touchscreen device to surf the web on the go with.

At $479 (expected to be lower through some outlets), the Viewsonic ViewPad 7 is worth a look for those who crave an inexpensive Android tablet that's easy to tote, especially if you don't want to be locked into a two-year contract. It's about $100 less than the Verizon Galaxy Tab, and you should be able to plug in a SIM Card for making phone calls and surfing the web when you're beyond hotspot range. Unfortunately, we couldn't get the 3G to work as advertised. The iPad is still the best tablet for our money, thanks to its vast collection of apps. But as the number of Android slates multiplies, this one does enough to warrant some attention.
