The "1-Minute" Review
- Mediocre screen resolution
- Weak camera
- Older Android software
- Locked carrier
Budget tablets are plentiful these days, but its not often you see them with branded. With the Verizon Ellipsis 8, the company hopes to provide an affordable device with the convenience of a service contract. Does it live up to the expectations? Lets see what the reviews think!
The tablet features a plastic shell and a 8-inch, 800 by 1280 LCD display. Reviews mention that while it is bright, it isn’t particularly crisp. Lacking IPS technologies, viewing angles can pose issues if you’re planning to share movies with family or friends. Android Central notes that it’s “not awful, especially for a tablet of this price.”
Verizon is tight-lipped about the quad-core 1.5Ghz processor, but the reviews indicate that is handles basic tasks and gaming with no issues. Coupled with the internal 5,000mAh battery, Verizon claims a battery life of 14 hours with mixed usage. Even among high-end tablets, that isn’t a bad figure. Hi Tech Reports put the tablet through its paces and calls it a great choice for “not so demanding customers.”
With 16GB of storage and support for microSD cards, the tablet offers plenty of storage for movies, music and apps. Reviews all noted that pre-installed bloatware was relatively low and that the Android 4.2.2 interface was nearly stock. This should lead to a respectable of space after everything is installed.
The camera features 5MP camera on the rear and a 1.3MP front-facing camera for video chat. Like most tablets, reviews on the camera were less than stellar. Lack of flash definitely hinders performance.
At the end of the day, the biggest perk to the tablet is its LTE support. If you don’t mind the concept of a data contract, it’s an incredibly affordable way to enjoy big-screen mobile fun on the go without the worries of Wi-Fi or tethering. Just keep in mind that a contract increases the cost of ownership as well.
Overall, Hi Tech Reports summed up the tablet well, stating, “We consider this tablet good buy if you’re new into the world of tablets, it has everything one tablet should have and it’s very easy to use.” If you’re a power user, there are more compelling options for a little more coin, but in its price-bracket it appears to be a respectable piece of kit.
