Informr score
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 currently has an Informr score of 7.3 out of 10. This score is based on our evaluation of 7 sources including reviews from users and the web's most trusted critics.

What's good

  • MicroSD support
  • Vibrant display
  • IR blaster

What's bad

  • Price
  • Mono speaker
  • So-so battery life
  • Poor camera
  • Screen resolution

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 attempts to offer a budget-friendly way to enjoy the Samsung device experience. With a lower resolution display and pared back internals, it’s far from a flagship device. But is it a good value for its price range? Let’s check out the reviews!

With an 8-inch 1280-by-800 pixel display, the Tab 4 8.0 is the middle ground between the 7.0- and 10.1-inch models. Overall, reviews found the screen quality and build of the tablet are positive. Android Authority called the screen “rather enjoyable as color reproduction, viewing angles, and outdoor visibility are all quite good.” However, the resolution does impact the experience. PC Magazine points out that it “lacks the clarity you get with the full-HD displays.” As more devices gain full-HD and higher displays, the Tab 4 8.0 will show its age quickly.

A quad-core 1.2GHz processor with 1.5GB of RAM powers the tablet. While this is far from bleeding-edge specs, the lower resolution screen helps to smooth out the experience. PC Magazine found that “performance is on par with entry-level Android smartphones.” Samsung’s split-view app support works well for basic tasks as well according to CNet who says that this “gives the Galaxy Tab 4 a performance edge in the midsize tablet category.”

All sizes of the Tab 4 include 16GB of internal storage. Should you need a little more room for your movies, music or other files, microSD support makes expanding storage space cheap and easy. Unfortunately, if you’re looking to snap pictures with your tablet, the 3MP flashless rear camera and 1.3MP front facing camera are weak even by last year’s standards.

In all, reviews of the tablet were hit and miss. While the build quality is good and the experience isn’t bad, its price seems to be its biggest weakness. CNet called the Tab 4 a “glorified budget tablet” and also noted that it is “far from the best deal out there.” This was a recurring theme in many reviews. Many competitors offer a tablet with better resolution, faster specs or even larger screens at a similar price point with PC Advisor UK pointing out that “though the Tab 4 8.0 is cheaper than the Tab S and Tab Pro tablets, it’s expensive compared to its rivals.”

Even though the Tab 4 8.0 is cheaper than the Tab S and Tab Pro tablets, it’s expensive compared to its rivals. Add to this some outdated specifications and it's no bargain.

The Galaxy Tab 8.0 is a solid choice. It’s super thin and light, and yet it’s still durable enough (even for the kids). It’s running the latest version of Android, which is always a good sign. It has Samsung’s TouchWiz software, but it’s not too bloated, and it can hand...

The Tab 4 8.0 comes with a better processor than its Tab 3 predecessor, and while that's nothing to scoff at, the differences basically end there. Before you decide that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 is right for you, I'd strongly recommend that you consider the competition. For only $34 more, you ca...

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 is a smooth-performing midrange slate, but it's overpriced compared to similar tablets.
