The "1-Minute" Review

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite is a budget-minded alternative to Samsung’s top-tier Galaxy Tab S lineup. But with all the competition out there, it doesn’t provide a compelling value for the price for anyone but the most casual of users.

What's good

  • Affordable
  • Lightweight
  • Full Google Play Store access

What's bad

  • Poor camera performance
  • Doesn’t multitask well
  • Low-contrast, weak display

Some people aren’t looking for a tablet that does it all--or the price tag that comes with all those features. They might also consider portability a key consideration. This is where the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite claims it excels, does it live up to their claims? Let’s see what reviewers think!

Design

The Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite is one of the smallest and lightest tablets from a major manufacturer available today. Reviewers said it was easily one of the most portable tablets around, competing with the likes of the iPad Mini (2021) in size and form. The power button and volume rockers are up at the top of the tablet, while the MicroSD slot is on the opposite side, making the tablet easy to use in both portrait or landscape orientations.

Display

Reviewers were not impressed with the display Samsung used. Dark parts in movies, as well as photos, become blurred and difficult to see clearly and brightness wasn’t up to par either. If you’re the type who loves watching media on your tablet, this isn’t the tablet for you.

Performance

The tablet also shows its budget roots when you try to multitask or play complex 3D games. Cut scenes could sometimes turn into slideshows and popping between apps is a slow, choppy affair.

However, if you’re looking for an affordable option for casual use -- such as surfing the web, keeping up social media, or checking your email -- it works fine.

Software & Storage

Reviewers stated that Samsung didn’t add a bunch of bloatware or extra fluff. You’ll get a fairly stock Android experience -- including full access to Google Apps and the Google Play Store. This can be hard to find in the budget tablet tier.

Cameras

Reviewers said the low-resolution cameras were good enough for video calls and the occasional photo. However, the photos were pretty washed out and lacked detail.

If you have a recent smartphone, it’s likely it will take far better pictures than the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite.

Battery Life

Reviewers found the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite offered around 10 hours of casual use on a single charge. But the lack of fast charging means you’ll be waiting a while once it’s time to recharge. Also, pushing the tablet with games or resource-intensive apps saw battery life dip very quickly. However, both issues are fairly common at this price point.

Audio

There are two speaker grills on the A7 Lite, one in the upper right corner and another in the opposite lower corner. Reviewers noted this design helps the sound to fill the room, even when the tablet is on a flat surface.

They were pleasantly surprised with the clarity and crispness and attributed that to the Dolby Atmos support.

The tablet also includes a headphone jack -- an increasingly rare find on mobile devices in 2021.

Specs at a Glance

  • Aluminum chassis
  • 8.7-inch display
  • MediaTek MT8768T Helio P22T processor
  • 3 or 4GB of RAM
  • Android 11
  • 32 or 64GB of storage with MicroSD slot
  • 8MP camera
  • 10-hour battery
  • Stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support

The Bottom Line

For the person who likes to keep things simple and portable, this device has most of everything. However, when compared to iPads and more powerful tablets, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite can’t really compete.

Tom’s Guide says, “While reading this review, you probably noticed the phrase "good enough" quite a few times, and that's for good reason: if you're looking for a compact Android tablet to browse the Internet, watch videos, or play games on, the Tab A7 Lite is good enough to satisfy your needs.”

Tech Radar states, “With the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite, you get a low-cost device that is great for basic internet browsing and watching the odd video through YouTube or other streaming services.”

While sacrifices were made to drop the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite's base price, it offers great value for younger kids and older relatives. It lacks the performance and display quality of the very best affordable slates, but it gets four years of software support and features expandable storage. It's also a...

The Galaxy Tab A7 Lite is a decent option if you’re looking for a cheap tablet with a sleek design and plenty of app support. I wouldn’t choose this tablet over a device with a higher resolution screen for streaming video, and the camera leaves something to be desired. There’s also no S Pen support,...

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite is an exceptionally portable and surprisingly better than average tablet for Malaysia’s masses. The Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite is certainly capable of serving anyone well, but ultimately boils down to your needs in a tablet.
