3.3/10
Informr score
The Alcatel One Touch Pop 8 currently has an Informr score of 3.3 out of 10. This score is based on our evaluation of 2 sources including reviews from users and the web's most trusted critics.

What's good

  • Low cost
  • Good basic performance
  • Usable one-handed

What's bad

  • Muted and subdued display colors
  • Mediocre battery life
  • Small onboard storage
  • Some pixilation on screen

Marketed at the budget crowd, the Alcatel One Touch Pop 8 manages to look like a decent device, at least on paper. When reviewers handled it for the first time, they found that its narrow and thin measurements make it incredibly easy to use one-handed. They also noticed that while the chassis was made of cheap, glossy plastic, the device itself had decent build quality.

As an entry-level device, most reviewers were not expecting too much from the 8-inch IPS display and it doesn't offer too much either. The low pixel density of 189ppi made it difficult for critics to read small fonts and get defined details on image. As well, they add that colors lacked the vivid pop of its competitors and instead ended up being muted and subdued.

With its 1.2GHz quad-core processor and 1 GB of RAM, the Pop 8 isn't in the running for the fastest tablet. Still, reviewers had no problems running basic tasks or casual games with minimal stutters. The problem arose for them when testing out more intense workloads. Many graphical games were barely playable, so they suggest sticking to more basic apps and games. Consumers will not be able to download too many apps, however, as the device only comes with 4GB of onboard storage. Luckily, the tablet does support expandable storage with cards of up to 64GB, though users can only transfer a handful of apps over to a microSD. As with the performance, battery life also falls in the mediocre category. While Alcatel clocks battery life at 8 hours, critics experienced a little over 6 hours life during moderate usage.

The Pop 8 isn't a device that lures people in because of its top specs. Instead, it focuses on attracting those concerned about money. Still, even at a lower entry point, Phone Arena states, " …it's hard to recommend the One Touch Pop 8 for reasons other than the price, and if you're looking for advanced features, there seem to be better alternatives out there."

One of the most affordable tablets with mobile data

The Alcatel OneTouch Pop 8 is a device that focuses on a budget price rather than specs. The version we tested (with mobile data on board) is competitively priced, and might lure in buyers who absolutely must have a mobile data-enabled tablet on the cheap. The price for that model of the Pop 8 is set at around €200 ($275), but that price may vary across markets. There might also be an even more affordable Wi-Fi-only version of the tablet that we did not test.

With that said, the OneTouch Pop 8 has some serious rivals that offer more advanced features in practically every other aspect. The Nexus 7 is a more powerful tablet with a vastly better 7-inch display and a more capable camera. In the world of 8-inch tablets, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 outshines it with a more powerful processor and a much better camera (but it does not support mobile data). And if you are specifically looking for a device that supports mobile data, the LG G Pad 8.3 comes to mind - it’s slightly more expensive, but it offers a superior display, a very nice and sturdy aluminum body, zippier internals, and a better camera.

I hate it

Makes life difficult. Most unuser friendly technology I have ever had. Don't buy it.
