What's good

  • Crisp, flush display
  • Adjustable screen temperature
  • Audible support
  • Plenty of storage
  • Premium design and feel
  • Battery life

What's bad

  • Price
  • Asymmetrical design might not be for everyone

Unlike the jump from the original Oasis to the 2017 model, Amazon's latest release -- the Kindle Oasis (2019) or Kindle Oasis (3rd generation) -- is more of a minor update than a major overhaul.

In fact, there are only 3 changes to be found -- but one of them could be very important to you depending on when and where you read.

Let's get the smaller ones out of the way first:

  1. The Kindle Oasis 2019 features an optimized page-turning system. While Amazon claims its the fastest ever, the Oasis 2017 was no slouch and few reviewers noticed an obvious difference.
  2. It's slightly more expensive. Which wouldn't always be a big deal, but the Oasis series has always had luxury pricing. If you're looking for a budget e-reader, the Oasis (2019) is not it.

But the big update which should interest anyone looking at the Kindle Oasis 2019 is the screen.

This is the first Kindle e-reader to feature a temperature adjustable light. This means you can make the screen warmer (yellower) or cooler (bluer) based on your preferences. It should also help to reduce eyestrain on those late-night reading binges.

Reviewers found the lighting smooth and the adjustment capabilities nice. You can even schedule when you'd like the temperature to change so you never have to dive into the settings yourself.

Otherwise, the Kindle Oasis (2019) is identical to the Oasis (2017) -- it even supports the same accessories. So if you'd like to know about performance, screen quality, Audible support, and other factors, be sure to check out our Kindle Oasis (2017) summary for a full run down of what reviewer's are saying.

Even if the warm screen function is the only notable new addition to this year’s model, it really is a significant one, and makes reading for long periods more pleasurable.

The Guardian

The most paper-like reader yet

from The Guardian

Amazon hasn’t changed much for the latest edition of the Kindle Oasis. Side-by-side they are identical on the outside. But what looks to be a small change – the ability to shift the colour of the frontlight from cold to warm white – makes a surprising amount of difference to the reading experience.

Craving Tech

The “easiest on the eyes” Kindle

If you have not had a Kindle before, I’d highly recommend grabbing the new Kindle Oasis 2019 model. However, if you already have the previous model, you may not need an upgrade unless you really want that “yellower” or “warmer” screen feature.

The Kindle Oasis gives you access to almost every book ever written, the battery last for weeks without needing to be charged, can be taken almost anywhere since it’s waterproof, offers Wi-Fi and LTE connectivity options (without a monthly fee), and won’t distract you with email, social media, etc. In my head, that makes the Kindle Oasis the greatest electronic device on the market today. It takes the best of reading, the best of technology, and combines them together.

Why should you buy a Kindle Oasis 3, instead of other flagship e-readers, such as the Kobo Forma or Barnes and Noble Nook Glowlight Plus? Amazon has the largest ebook store in the world and basically controls the North American market and also in the UK. They have so much revenue coming in from AWS and their e-commerce division that they can develop custom features not found in other e-readers, just to give people more options. A system wide dark mode is really solid and so are the customized Amazon fonts and manual page turn buttons.
