What the Critics Are Saying...

TechRadar

The Xperia L1 gives you Sony styling on a budget and that screen is nice and big, but a weak chipset, average camera and lack of a fingerprint scanner hold it back from true greatness, even at this low price.

- Damien McFerran, TechRadar
LaptopMedia

Xperia L1 features the typical Sony design but unlike the higher-end models here the construction is fully plastic. Xperia L1 is aimed at people looking for larger working space as its screen is 5.5-inch. However, it is one of the main energy consumers and therefore, the available 2620mAh battery is...

If design and screen size are you main preoccupations, then the L1 is definitely the budget phone you need. Its resemblance to Sony’s higher range smartphones and the large screen it offers make it one of the best looking phones of its price-range. The benchmark results and general slowne...

A big screen budget blower that falls short elsewhere

Sony’s elegance in an affordable version

from LaptopMedia

Xperia L1 features the typical Sony design but unlike the higher-end models here the construction is fully plastic. Xperia L1 is aimed at people looking for larger working space as its screen is 5.5-inch. However, it is one of the main energy consumers and therefore, the available 2620mAh battery is not one of the most durable ones.

If design and screen size are you main preoccupations, then the L1 is definitely the budget phone you need. Its resemblance to Sony’s higher range smartphones and the large screen it offers make it one of the best looking phones of its price-range. The benchmark results and general slowness when multitasking hold it back, and if you plan on using it for intense gaming or video streaming, you might be better off with something else. If not, the L1 is an attractive budget phone and should be more than enough to satisfy your basic needs

The Sony Xperia L1 is a lower mid-range smartphone that offers a sound performance in most areas. If you expect no more from your smartphone than to work and occasionally shoot a photo, you will be very happy with this device. Even though some might complain about the bloatware in the system and the high temperatures under load can be annoying, there are several areas in which the Sony Xperia L1 is quite convincing: the precise GPS module, the extensive and up-to-date software, its good input devices and a display with good color accuracy, for example.

Not targeting power users to begin with

The Xperia L1 is a sensible offer from a top-tier manufacturer that's hard to ignore. It's a statement as Sony returns to a niche, which it wouldn't give up to Xiaomi or Meizu without a fight. Nokia and Motorola want a piece of it too though, and the Xperia L1 will have to work hard to prove its worth.
