What the Critics Are Saying...

TechnoBuffalo

Sony's Xperia 1 is one the best Android smartphones available that's not from Samsung or Google. From its powerful specs to its beautiful industrial design that screams premium, the Xperia 1 does just about everything right.

- Danny Zepeda, TechnoBuffalo
The Inquirer

The display could be a real selling point, especially if the cameras deliver the goods; tweaking pics on a large HDR display is quite an attractive prospect. And the potential performance for multi-tasking and gaming also looks promising. At the same time, Sony isn't really doing a great deal differ...

The Xperia 1 looks wacky at first with its very tall 21:9 aspect ratio but aping the dimensions of a cinema screen and Netflix content could be a canny move by Sony for a niche market. Let’s not pretend this is going to drag Sony’s phones back into the mainstream – but this is a premium device with...

The display could be a real selling point, especially if the cameras deliver the goods; tweaking pics on a large HDR display is quite an attractive prospect. And the potential performance for multi-tasking and gaming also looks promising. At the same time, Sony isn't really doing a great deal different here, and with the Xperia 1 coming out in Spring at a price of £849, there's an argument to be had that it might end up being overshadowed by the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10 5G.

It’s all about the display, the first 4K HDR OLED on a smartphone.

Many things about the new Sony Xperia 1 will please the loyal fans: the design, for example, looks like a modern interpretation of the classic OmniBalance design language. The triple camera with three different focal lengths also appears practical for everyday use, as does the 21:9 form factor.

While it doesn’t seem like Sony started with a completely blank sheet of paper, on first impressions the Xperia 1 doesn’t feel like an iterative update at all. Overall, it feels like a definite step in the right direction for the company’s flagship smartphone trajectory, and depending on how its rivals play their cards, this new Xperia might be one to watch out for in 2019.
