If you can work with the flawed keyboard and accept that its not a multimedia powerhouse, you might be impressed with what it does well—call and message.

Looks very much like the Pantech Duo smartphone

from MobileBurn

AT&T and Pantech were nice enough to send us one of their new C740 Matrix dual-slider cell phones to check out. As you can see from the photos and video, the Matrix is a phone that offers users a traditional alphanumeric keypad as well as a full QWERTY keyboard. In fact, the phone looks very much like the Pantech Duo smartphone that AT&T offers. While the Duo is powered by the Windows Mobile operating system, the Matrix makes due with a far simpler feature phone user interface.
While we like the similarly spec'd Samsung A767 Propel a bit better than the Matrix, due largely to its keyboard, the Matrix is still a very nice and affordable handset for people who like options when it comes to messaging. The Matrix is available in your choice of blue, red, and green for US$79.99 with a new contract, after a mail-in rebate. You can get it for even less from our own store if you click on the "Buy this Phone" link at the top of the page....

Unlike last year's WInMo-running Pantech Duo, the Matrix opts for a more straightforward dumbphone interface while adding 3G HSDPA, GPS and a slick looking design into the mix.

For an $80 phone, the Pantech Matrix is really good deal. Pantech could have skimped on the build quality and pushed out a cheap, flimsy phone, but instead created a product that feels solid and slides smoothly in any direction. Despite being about an inch thick, the Matrix doesn't feel oversized—they made it as narrow and short as possible so that it doesn't feel too cumbersome. As a result, the Matrix sits nicely in the hand, and when the backlit keyboard is exposed, it almost feels sleek. I really like the 0-9 keypad, as its flat design and glowing numbers gives it a clean look. And though buttons aren't physically separated, each one has a bit of a bubble on it that gives a nice click when you press down.

I bought the Pantech Matrix almost two years ago with a qualified upgrade service plan. I do not use or need a bunch of extra features on a phone and the Matrix was just what I needed. I will be upgrading to another model as my plan is coming to an end; for anyone who is looking for a nice, clean looking, easy to use phone - the Matrix is a good choice. The durability of the phone was far better than I would have expected. It has met the concrete on many, many occasions - yet it still functions properly and the slide mechanism has yet to have any problems. Good job Pantech. Less

OK, i got this phone because of the dual slider. At first, i thought it was realy good, and addicting. The keyboard buttons are very small, there is an ok screen, though it could be bigger, and the numerical part is relativley flat. The thing that realy bugged me was the camera. Even after you have taken a photo, the zoom makes no sence, it zooms in all the way, and you cant do anything about it, also, it lacks a flash. It is also very very very bulky. I liked how the it was a dual slider, and the menu was very good, but the navigational keys on the front of the phone didnt feel very good, unlike the volume keys which felt good. I didn't have an internet plan, so it costed money to go on, and it always went on because the center button on the navagation keys goes to internet, and you cant disable it. After a while, this phone just gets a little boring. It isn't a bad phone, but, compared to what is on the market now, it is weak. This phone has good means and everything, but, it just could be a little better. All in all, a good messaging phone. So, if you are going to get a new phone, I would recomend getting something a little better then this, but, if you can only get this or a flip phone, get the pantech matrix, because I don't think you will be too disappointed. I highly reccommend this phone to fast texters, people who email, and people who are looking for a remarkable phone!!! Good job Pantech!!! Less

I really like my phone, yes the ringers and alarms should be louder. I had it for almost a year just under a couple of weeks thankfully warranty still on the phone. They sent me a refurbirshed one as my original phone the speaker and mike both went out. It was a hassle not having a phone to work for a week. Then I got my refurbished one and the battery kept dying. Since the battery was almost a year old I bought a new battery phone still kept dying. Called at&t again and they had to send the 2nd refurbished phone. It worked for almost 2 weeks and the speaker and mike went out on this phone. Now they want me to go for the 3rd refurbished phone. This is not acceptable. I do not mind getting a refurbished phone but they should make sure everything is working on them before they send them back to you. I have been with out a phone essentially since the end of December. I see where other people have had problems with the slider, I have not had that problem thankfully. This is the 1st phone that I have had that had a qwerty keyboard on it and I loved it. Just wish I could get one that was reliable. It is a hassle to have to be on the phone with the warranty people anywhere 30 mins to an hour as they run you thru the same tests everytime. Not only that you should be able to get a replacement over night or withing 2 days without having to pay for the shipping, isn't that one of the reasons to have a warranty and customer satisfaction???? Not having a working reliable phone since the end of December is unacceptable, as there are times I need to reach someone when I am out due to some health issues. My husband has had it he wants me to just buy a new phone. That would be fine and have been trying to decide on one, there are way too many choices. Anyone have any suggestions for a good reliable phone, that has loud ringers, alarms, qwerty keyboard and camera? Thanks for your comments in advance! Less

Love it. Have had for 11 months. If yahoo instant message screen gets frozen, sign into your yahoo online on your laptop, and it automatically signs you out on your cell, unfreezing it. I did finally have trouble (at 11 months) with a freezing issue where I could not get to any of the three Instant message companies offered on the Messaging choice page, and AT+T replaced it. No probs with the new one. AT+T offers instant messaging as well as text for their unlimited messaging plan-some companies you only get text on an unlimited plan. Great phone, great plan. Unfortunately, you cannot access G-Mail from this phone. Less

I am SO disappointed...

from Amazon
This looks like such a great phone. It is not. It is SO hard to do everything. There are some key things missing. It takes a lot of steps to get anywhere. There's so much potential in the two keyboards. But it doesn't make up for the aggravation. Sorry, Pantech.

This phone... is the worst phone I've ever had. I'm usually pretty content with what I have, but this, I regret paying for. I've had mine for 9 months or so, and I am sorry to say that I really hate this phone. The features hardly work, and after coming from Sony Ericsson, I noticed a lot of things that could have been done much, much better. In my opinion, the only good thing about this phone is the slider and QWERTY keypad. Everything else just blows. ESPECIALLY the features... and here are just a few: 1. When you press the side button to view the time when the phone is not in use, there are no notifications of messages (Sony Ericsson puts a little envelope on the time screen for you to see) 2. When the phone is closed, any messages, screens, and most 'features' are closed. So, if you start writing a message, and you have to close your phone for a moment to put it in your pocket or something, when you go to resume typing... it's gone. This also includes stop watch and other various features. I'll set the stop watch, close my phone, and look at it a minute later and realize it was closed. which... sucks. 3. The vibrate is incredibly loud. I've gotten used to it now, but it makes a lot of noise. I believe that it's due to the fact that it has 3 separate plates to it (the slides) and they rattle against each other during vibrate. 4. You cannot delete multiple messages at a time. It's either delete all, or one at a time. 5. Also when deleting messages, the delete all button is right next to delete (single). In turn... I've accidentally deleted everything in my inbox. On multiple occasions. Not a good thing.. 6. I think the screen might be slightly convex, which leads to a lot of scratching (my screen is actually cracked, but that's from abuse.) 7. It's a little on the chunky side. 8. If you press back while writing a note, it doesn't save or even ask to save. which annoys me very much. The same kinda goes for messages; when you press back, it will ask to save to drafts. Either way you can't cancel and continue typing. 9. You cannot view the time while you're using the phone. The time is only visible on the home screen, and not at all in calls. 10. Doesn't have the greatest battery life. The longest it's gone without charging was a weekend. Once. Usually, it dies before the weekend is over if I don't charge it. In fact, if I don't charge it each night, it usually dies the next day. On that topic, you can't check battery percentage either. Sony Ericsson had a feature where you could look at the battery life and see the actual percentage of battery life left, on this phone, you have 3 bars to guess how long you think it might last you. Sadly enough, that's not all to the cons. All in all, this phone is a piece of crap. I was very disappointed and pretty pissed off after spending $[...] on it, and not realizing how bad it was until a week after I could have returned it.I do enjoy the slider keyboard and number pad, but that really is all. I guess bluetooth is a plus, but nowadays almost all phones have it. Oh, and 3G can't be turned off. I don't have access to it in my plan, but it just eats up the battery life. So, if you're considering this phone- don't. Go look for something better. Less

just got this phone for my mom and have been trying to figure it out for her... this phone is just not easy to use. not at all self explanatory, i can't figure it out even with the manual. i have had numerous cell phones (nokias, razrs, and on my second iphone) so i am not a newbie. totally agree with the reviewer regarding the small size of the upper row of buttons on he keyboard being too small. also i have been kicked into the web browser three times - which costs money, and she really doesn't need more charges. it is going back - if i can't figure it out, and if i can't there is no way my mom is going to be able to successfully use it. maybe i am just spoiled with the iphone. i feel like they tried to pack to many features into a phone, and totally forgot to make it user friendly. currently i can't even find out where to plug the charger in! do i need to remove the case they put on in the store? who knows. not that i am the most technical savvy person - but i have never needed to even read a cell phone manual. phone is rotten. I have tinkered my self to death with this phone, with in a week the screen portion of the phone has popped loose and would hang up on me in a phone call or even a text message, I took it to at&t and they in turn replaced it, the same problem occurred yet again in about a week at&t emailed me with a recall for the phone and I was issued yet another phone. I am now replacing it with a different model. I hate this phone and if you look at the history of this phone and plan to use it you should never buy this phone or anything else from pantech!
