What the Critics Are Saying...

PCWorld

The Treo 650 from Sprint combines the venerable Palm operating system with a nicely designed handset that includes a fairly usable QWERTY keyboard and a vibrant display. It's not perfect--some design quirks and a high price are among its drawbacks--but there's an awful lot to like here.

Little did I know that NO PalmOne product is compatible with Vista 64bit and they (by the words of one of their customer reps today)are not working on a fix. Now I'm going to have to buy a new phone if I want to be able to sync. More and more new systems are shipping with Vista 64bit and many people are caught unaware of this fact. Please know if you buy this phone, it will not work with Vista 64bit as of the date of this review. Less

Pro: Beautiful screen, takes great photos, easy to use QWERTY keyboard, Con: FREEZES ALOT! Have to remove battery cover every time it freezes to restart... appx 5 times a day! I only owned this phone for a couple days when i realized it had serious problems! Granted, it was refurbished when i purchased it from Cingular(AT&T) but i got on the Palm website to read the reviews and see if anyone else was having similar problems(should've done this before i bought it)and it was apparent that the problem i was having was EXTREMELY COMMON! The phone randomly freezes up and shuts off, it looks like it's still on b/c the green light is blinking, but when you try to refresh the screen, NOTHING HAPPENS, so i would have to remove the battery cover, hit the reset button replace the batter cover then turn the phone back on. Thus throughout i am not able to receive phone calls and have no idea how long the phone has been spontaneously off. The phone is absolutely beautiful and everything i want in a phone so i am very dissappointed that it has such major problems. FINALLY... the exchange through Cingular has not been smooth either, because it is refurbished you can not exchange it in a store so i have to package it up and mail it back before i can get another phone.... did i mention i've spent over an hour on hold with Cingular, AT&T and some Premier company something or other that handles their business accounts, being transferred from company to company, person to person and some people seem like they don't have a clue. I just want a phone that works. So temporarily i am back to using my cheap old cell phone with no fun features until i can get this all taken care of. UGH!! Less

Pro: Touchscreen, Keyboard, Music Player. Con: Size The Palm Treo 650 is simply amazing. As a young adult, i always need a way to keep myself organized and have all my documents in hand. The treo's touch screen makes the phone unique, considering not many people have a touchscreen phone. The keyboard allows me to text message and type up little memos quickly and efficently. The only really big con of the device is its size. It becomes very difficult to find stylish cases and covers to give the phone a unique touch. Overall though its one of the best phones i've ever seen and i'd recommend it to everyone :) Less

Strengths: Great size, weight and telephone/PDA function. Improved battery (can be easily switched out for fresh battery when travelings). Weaknesses: Screen turns off after only 30 seconds Beware! There are two versions of the Treo 650. Mine, which is branded Cingular, does not contain an option to allow the screen to stay on when you are using the phone. I took it to Cingular and they informed me that the first 650 version had this problem which could not be corrected. Thus it was replaced with a successor Treo 650. Be sure you get the second model as several unscrupulous online dealers are deliberately unloading the defective first models! Less

Excellent internet capability. Can be used as an MP3 player (comes with RealPlayer). It can be used as a GPS with a cheap GPS receiver. I can open Word/Excel documents with it. And I can play games with it with the nice big screen while waiting in the traffic or while shopping with my wife at the mall.I've also used Windows CE based pocket PCs and I love Palm OS's simplicity, and and abundance of application (freeware/shareware) availability.Must have freewares: T_Crises (tetris), HS2 listing program, Sudoku, Noah Lite dictionary, DiggleBug (to take quick notes), Adobe reader, Gmail applet, WatchM (for multiple alarms). It is a little bit out dated (now there are 680 and 700), but it is still one of the best full function PDA phones.I like PalmOS better than Windows Mobile because it's just much more responsive and less buggy. Treo 689 is better than 650 but not dramatically. It cost much more than 650. As a phone, it's great. I love the PDA fuctions. I orgainze my day use the phone and love it. The best features, are the free softwares available online. I installed a couple and plan to have more. Less

I love this phone, it does everything I want it to do (memos, emails, etc.) I couldn't wait to get this phone. Weaknesses: Too bulky in size, could be slimmer. Takes a bit getting used to, in terms of handling the size. Keys malfunction within one year of purchase- rigth when the warranty expires. Using experience: 1 Year I would purchase the Treo 650 again. It is the best smart phone on the market -- GPS and touchscreen are a plus, not to mention all of the other great features. I bought my Treo 650 from Palm. Would be great if they had a exchange program. Would ensure customer loyalty. I currently have a Palm Pilot and a broken Treo 650 in my possession. Less
