An excellent intro to smart phones, if you can stomach the sluggishness

The Palm Pixi Plus has most of the software features of the Palm Pre, but with a smaller screen and slower processor, we can't hold it up as a competitor to the iPhone or the HTC Desire. Thankfully, its low price puts it gently but firmly up against the BlackBerry Curve 8520, and it can definitely punch its weight in this class. (The 8520 is the same price as the Pixi on O2, although you can find it cheaper on other networks.) If you're not too bothered about having a Qwerty, the HTC Legend is faster and has a bigger screen -- and it's available for around £20 a month.

The Palm Pixi Plus serves up a solid user experience as a $99.99 smartphone on Verizon. It offers good integration with social networks like Facebook, populates your address book automatically from email accounts, and has a UI that's intuitive and fun to use.

Still, it's more sluggish than the more powerful Pre Plus, and priced just below several highly competitive devices that may be a better purchase for power users looking for deeper customization. The HTC Droid Eris, for example, sports HTC's Sense experience, which integrates your contacts with Facebook and Twitter, and gives you seven home screens to customize. RIM's BlackBerry Tour sports a better 3.2MP camera and a top notch messaging experience. If you're after webOS, I still suggest you consider the Palm Pre over the Palm Pixi Plus because it has a faster processor and twice the application RAM and internal storage space, though it has a bulkier form factor.

There’s no way around it – the Pixi Plus is small. It is slightly taller than the Pre Plus (when closed) but isn’t nearly at thick and also weights less. The device fits comfortably in the hand with the soft-touch coating on the back, though it doesn’t feel as oval as the Pre Plus, and its slim design means it can be tucked away in your pants’ pocket without even being noticed.
