Editor’s Note: This post has been updated for 2018.

1. iSheep SF220

Best Flip Phone for Kids and Seniors

Pros:  Large keypad, Quick dial buttons, Photocall feature, SOS button, charging dock, microSD support, quad-band GSM
Cons:  Limited battery, limited internal storage

The iSheep SF220 offers a bounty of features aimed at seniors and kids in a simple to use design.

The larger buttons make it easy to find keys when dialing while the large font on the screen makes notifications and caller ID more visible.

The quick dial buttons on the keypad allow you to set two quick contacts. By adding a microSD card, you can also store photos on the device and assign them to contacts for even more calling options.

The rear cover on the phone includes an SOS button that will sound an alarm and send text messages to up to 5 contacts and then call the numbers in order until someone answers.

While the camera is essentially useless, there are a few basic perks -- including a torch and FM radio -- to add extra value to the mobile.

As one reviewer on Amazon puts it, "This is such a great little phone especially for those whose hearing and eyesight is not what it used to be!"

Bottom Line...
Combining accessibility features with a basic set of communications options, the iSheep SF220 is a budget-friendly option perfect for seniors and kids.

2. Nokia 2720 Fold

Best Stylish Flip Phone

Pros: Minimalist, sleek design, hidden until lit front panel, long standby time, durable design
Cons: Weak ringer, dim outer display

Combining a glossy outer shell, a hidden front display, and smooth curves, the Nokia 2720 Fold stands out from the crowd.

The 1.8-inch main display is bright and colorful. The low resolution panel features good viewing angles and makes text easy to read but might not be the best for viewing images or using the included mini mobile browser.

With only 32MB of internal storage and no microSD support, you won't be able to use the phone for media. But there is a 2.5mm headphone jack for connecting a headset and Bluetooth for making calls.

On Amazon, a reviewer says, "Petite, discrete, light to carry and eye-catchingly attractive... a damn good, little phone which serves all my requirements well"

Bottom Line...
While it's not the fullest-featured phone in this roundup, it's definitely one of the most attractive. If you're looking for basic features with a unique look, the Nokia 2720 Fold is a great value.

3. Samsung E2530

Best Flip Phone with Smartphone-Like Features

Pros:  Long battery life, microSD support, Basic apps, Quad band
Cons:  Weak camera

While no one will mistake this compact flip for a smartphone, it offers some of the conveniences -- though in a scaled back experience. Through the Samsung App platform, you can basic social media apps, communications tools, and games to the phone.

However, with only 10MB of internal storage, you'll definitely need to take advantage of the microSD slot to avoid bogging down the phone or running out of storage.

The clam design provides a simple but effective look with smooth lines and a good feel in the hand according to reviewers.

There's also a 2-inch display to make reading texts or checking call notifications easy but at 128-by-160 pixels, don't expect it to be great for reading large amounts of text or using the included web browser.

Bottom Line...
If you're looking to simplify your mobile experience, the Samsung E2530 offers a compelling quad-band option with a bit more flexibility than most flip phone options.

4. TTsims Flip TT140

Best Budget-Friendly Basic Flip Phone

Pros:  Minimalist design, FM radio, microSD support
Cons:  Weak battery, so-so display

This little flip phone is bare bones. The shell is lightweight plastic, the screen is small -- even for a flip -- and the VGA camera won't impress.

But the phone costs less than a night out with friends...

It covers all of the basic needs with a speakerphone, bluetooth, torch, FM radio, alarms, and MP3 player -- though you'll need to take advantage of the microSD support to store more than a couple tracks.

On Amazon, a reviewer says, "... this is perfect for anyone who just wants a basic mobile for making calls or texting"

Bottom Line...
The TTsims Flip TT140 offers a ton of value for the price. Sure, its not a stunner in the design department and the screen is so-so, but at the price, it's nearly disposable.

The Wisdom of a “Dumb” Phone

There’s no doubt that smartphones have changed the world forever.

However, there’s more debate lately on whether many of those changes were for the better.

From blue light interfering with sleep to notifications keeping us constantly distracted, there’s mounting evidence that smartphones might be causing increased stress and decreased productivity.

That’s not to mention the impact of constant social media streams on mood, the possibility that any number of companies could be watching your every move, and the fact that these new mobiles essentially place a never ending source of advertising in your pocket.

If you’re curious to see why many people are choosing to ditch their smartphones for simpler models, check out our smartphone ditching guide .

It includes links to additional reading and resources to help you make an informed decision about the right tech for you or your family.

How We Picked

The picks in this buyer's guide are what we think are the best flip phones for most people.

We selected these models based on analysis of expert reviews from around the web, user feedback on sites like Amazon, forum comments on our site, social media discussions, and more.

We compared the things most people consider when purchasing a basic mobile.

In short, we did the research — so you don’t have to .

When answering the question, “What’s the best flip phone for the average user?” , we considered the following primary criteria:

A Strong Battery
A mobile is only useful if it has a charge. While standby battery life is often better on basic mobiles, we wanted to make sure that you could get through a day or two without hunting for a charge.

Basic Features
Calling, texting, and picture messages felt like a great baseline for standard mobile use. This also means that unless noted in the description, these picks won’t sit and vibrate or chime all day and distract you.

Easy to Find
While you can buy a smartphone just about anywhere these days, basic mobiles are getting harder to come by. For that reason, we chose picks that you can easily pick up online or that you might find at a local carrier store.

Solid Reviews
Let’s face it, most basic mobiles sit at the bottom end of the price scale. And when prices get that low, quality can get sketchy. We scoured online reviews for each of our picks to be sure that you won’t find weak hinges, dim screens, tinny speakers, or other surprises.

Still Not Sure?

While we feel our picks offer a great experience to a wide range of people, there’s not a single pick that will be perfect for everyone.

How you like to keep in touch, your budget, and even personal design preferences will change what you consider ideal.

This is why we make multiple recommendations and suggestions based on mobile features, prices, and unique characteristics.

If you’ve got a favorite flip phone, or you’ve made the switch from smartphones to a more simple flip option, let us know how it went in the comments below!

We want more people to live a bit more and worry a little less — and this seems like a great way to calm the chaos.

P.S. If you're looking for additional options, be sure to check the Best Basic Mobiles of 2018 roundup. It includes some great candy bar mobile options as well as some great retro reboots that are sure to scratch that nostalgic itch.
