The "1-Minute" Review

The OnePlus 6T hopes to keep up the company's record of producing devices that rival top-tier phones on the market while offering prices closer to the mid-tier. The 6T is an iterative update to the popular OnePlus 6 .

As such, most changes were subtle. But there are a few additions -- and subtractions -- to consider when deciding if the phone is for you.

Around front, you’ll see one of the biggest changes to the phone. The 6.41-inch AMOLED panel is nearly bezel-free. Running at 2340-by-1080 pixels, reviews indicate it offers outstanding clarity and punchy, vivid colors to help make games, pictures, and movies pop.

The screen also includes with one of the smallest notches used on a mobile phone to date. It’s a slight dip for the single-lens camera and nothing more. The earpiece is located on the top edge of the phone to keep the notch as small as possible. Unfortunately, OnePlus also removed the notification LED to save space.

The screen also hides an in-display fingerprint sensor. While the technology looks cool, reviewers found it hit or miss. So you might be better relying on facial recognition or a PIN to secure your phone.

To make matters worse, OnePlus removed the 3.5mm headphone jack to make room for the in-display scanner. But they include a USB Type-C to 3.5mm adapter in the box should you need it.

The OxygenOS software running the device is based on Android 9.0 Pie. It offers a nearly stock Android experience. Reviewers loved the snappy response time in menus and panels and the minimal changes made.

The only other change to the phone is a larger battery. Now rated at 3,700mAh, the battery should have no problem lasting through a day of regular use.

Otherwise, the phone is identical to its predecessor. For more on what to expect from the phone in terms of performance, cameras, and more, check out our summary for the OnePlus 6 .

What the Critics Are Saying...

PhoneArena

It feels much more reliable and future-proof than many higher-priced phones. Yet, the 6T undeniably falls short of the best when it comes to the camera. As cool as the new finger scanner looks, it is definitely not as fast or as accurate as the rear-positioned fingerprint reader that was in the 6. A...

Droid Life

This is the value phone still to this day, and not just because it’s cheaper than the phones it competes with. The OnePlus 6T is legitimately a good phone with impressive hardware, almost all the specs you need, great software and performance, a solid display, and battery life that few can match. It...

The sleek design and high-quality materials compare well to phones from Apple, Google, LG, and Samsung. The AMOLED display is very good, battery life is better than most, and data speeds were among the best. It's a bummer that voice calls are barely average. The OnePlus 6T is legitimately a good phone with impressive hardware, almost all the specs you need, great software and performance, a solid display, and battery life that few can match. It now works on Verizon, is sold at T-Mobile, and has an in-display fingerprint reader, which is super cool.

The sleek design and high-quality materials compare well to phones from Apple, Google, LG, and Samsung. The AMOLED display is very good, battery life is better than most, and data speeds were among the best. It's a bummer that voice calls are barely average. I'd love to see the 6T's ringer switch show up on other phones. Similarly, I wish the stereo speakers available on most other flagships would find their way to OnePlus devices.

This phone is really nice. For a starting price of approximately $550 USD, it’s incredible. I wasn’t so sure about OnePlus moving from the midrange to the space between midrange and headliner phones – but they did it over the last year anyway – and they did it well. Now they’re in a position that’s strikingly difficult to beat, with a value in a smartphone that by all outward appearances seems to be near-impossible to beat.

Wired

The best somewhat affordable Android phone

from Wired

If you want a top-of-the-line phone, but don’t want to pay $800-$1,000 for it, the OnePlus 6T is every bit as powerful and starts at $549. In fact, it’s likely far more up-to-date on security patches and probably more comfortable to use thanks to its innovative in-display fingerprint sensor and array of nice touch gestures.
