Had your fingers crossed for a cut-price Pixel 3a alternative? The Nokia 7.2 gets tantalisingly close. It looks the part, runs a clean version of Android (with the latest version set to follow swiftly) and has a battery that should last all day. The camera can't match Google's algorithmic image quality, and performance is only OK, but at £250 here in the UK, the bargain price makes up for it. If getting the freshest version of Android is important to you, good luck finding more phone for less cash.

Add in the fact that the software is speedy and bloat-free, and that the build quality is top-notch (as you would expect from Nokia), and this a very capable all-rounder.

Nokia’s mid-range headliner

from Expert Reviews

It excels in many areas, including design, performance and display quality. Yet the battery life issues are a serious threat to any potential recommendation. But perhaps most of all, I’m sorely disappointed with the camera. It’s good, and a decent enough offering for the price, but it doesn’t manage to live up to Nokia’s lofty promises.

A mid-segment contender from HMD, at long last

If you are a spec hunter, you might not get too impressed by the chip on the Nokia 7.2 and might hem and haw about the battery. But if you are looking at a phone that looks premium and takes great pictures and for the most part, performs very smoothly, the 7.2 could well be the phone for you.

On its own, the Nokia 7.2 is a really solid buy. It has a premium design, fantastic display, and clean software backed by guaranteed updates. However, when you factor in the choppy performance, lackluster cameras, and competing phones like the Pixel 3a, your buying decision isn't so clear-cut.
