The "1-Minute" Review

If you take the sexy Motorola KRZR and put it through cell phone boot camp you end up with the Motorola W385; similar in design to the KRZR but more durable and less flashy.

While the dual band CDMA W385 shares a similar frame with the KRZR, the exterior is black and rubberized, making it easy to hold and adding a layer of durability. The feature set, too, has taken a step down from its sexier counterpart. The external vertical monochrome display offers the time, date, battery strength and caller ID, but the 96x32 pixel resolution may cause you to squint. The internal 1.8” 160x128 pixel resolution screen supports 65K colors. Though a decent screen, it is not of the same quality as it’s sexy cousin.

Inside you will find a keypad also similar to the KRZR but shiny metal has been replaced with the same rubbery material used on the exterior, again a durable feel that makes for confident typing. The navigation array is clear and well placed, just above the number keys, and consists of a circular frame with four touch points and an okay button in the middle.

With the W385 you can call, text, send multimedia messages, enjoy two email accounts and use the WAP 2.0 browser to surf the web. The feature set includes Bluetooth 2.0, a speakerphone, a 1,000 contact phone book and the ever present collection of stocking stuffer features: alarm clock, world clock and notepad.

The W385 should appeal to people who want a durable phone with good call quality that still looks good and offers some extras.

Good durable, basic cell phone

I have had this phone for about 6 years and I only need to charge it about once a month (probably because I only use it for a minute a day LOL). But I rarely use the camera although it has come in handy once or twice. Good durable absolutely basic cell phone.

THIS PHONE IS A PIECE OF CRAP, BECAUSE :

1) It SUCKS!!!! 2) The reception isn't there, when you're on the subway, trying to call 911......... 3) The battery never LASTS.... I'm on my THIRD (x3) one already, within 3 years ($60.00 each X 3 = $ 180.00 + taxes). " WHERE'S THATS ENERGIZER BUNNY ? "...More

Whether, you like it OR not, 5) The 1.3MP camera, is fantastic !!!!! For a five year old kid! ---- SUCKS ! 6) Has your adapter, DIED yet ? Well, it will soon !!! Cause, mine died yesterday !!!!!! (Geez, you think its still under warranty, after 1 month? NO SIR !!), 7) SCREW THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. It a money grabber...... **** BUT, SERIOUSLY SPEAKING............ THIS PHONE HAS BEEN OUTDATED, SINCE IT CAME ONTO THE MARKET..... AND, IF YOU JUST GOT ONE ??? WELL, YOU BETTER GO BACK AND GET YOUR $$ MONEY $$ !! MAY GOD, BLESS YOU ALL !! Less

Hate it with a passion

I absolutely detest this phone. For one, I left it on charge for 3 DAYS, and it died within a day. And if I text a lot, dead within a day. Camera quality sucks, if you zoom in it looks like watercolour. Also my back will not stay on worth a damn. Not a good phone if you like to text, the inbox and outb...More

Camera quality sucks, if you zoom in it looks like watercolour. Also my back will not stay on worth a damn. Not a good phone if you like to text, the inbox and outbox only hold about 65 messages before they get full. Not good for sending pictures also. This phone is good for people who need a phone to call, nothing else. Less

This is a good phone for the first-time cell owner.Has all the basic features, and I never lost reception unless I was in a sub-basement.But the thing that impressed me the most was how strong it is! I've dropped it down stairs,concret,hardwood...everywhere.And it continued working! It still does, too, with scratches but it makes phone calls! Overall I would say this is a great first phone,or a cell phone for someone who doesn't need anything fancy. Less

Pro: Nothing. Con: Everything. Using experience: 64 days I hate this phone with all of my heart. I switched to this phone after using a phone just like it without the camera and I think I'm going to switch back soon. First of all the camera has the worst quality I've ever seen and have the time I have to restart the phone because the "image could not be captured." I also used this phone mainly for texting and it's version of T9 called "iTAP" forgets a word or name that I teach every fifty texts or so, causing me to be frequently irritated by having to use its annoying interface to teach it again. My newest issue with this phone however is the fact that if I even think about placing it near even the tiniest drop of water it shorts out and none of the keys on the phone will work except the end key and the only way to fix it is to violently punch it on the keyboard until they work again. I tried drying it out with a bowl of rice and blow drying it and the best part is that it shows no water damage on the indicator. I can't wait to get rid of this phone. Less

I guess you could say that this is a pretty decent phone. Two things that I do not like are the design and features. My friends always asked me why I would get such an ugly phone and I would tell them because its free! For a free phone its AWESOME! It works really well and I didnt do anything different but the battery lasts for a week without charging. The features are limited but I dont need them since I have an Ipod Touch as well. The camera has very bad quality but does the job though I can hardly tell what I took a picture of. I did drop my phone quite a bit but if you get a case it is fine. I do not have texting in my plan so it does not matter to me about the bad texting things. Although it is still running, I got a new phone with Rogers instead of with Telus again because Telus sent me hundreds of messages and made me pay for them! When I decided that I wanted a new plan, they tried to make me pay such a big price to cancel my old plan so I just got a new one. TIP: Do not get a three year plan on a phone that Telus tells you is good without researching it yourself. I was lucky to get a better phone but most people arent. Also, make sure that the plan is one that includes everything you will need and want for the next 3 years. Less

Good phone

not my fav

I've had this phone for just over a year now and i hate it!! the messaging is slow and it takes forever to send and receve messages. Someone will text me and i will get it like an hour later. I've dropped it a couple of times and the paint is all chipped and scratched. not the best phone but it has the essentials.

Two years ago, I needed something to receive calls from, and not much else, so I chose a basic cellphone. And I couldn't have chosen better! I've been using the same phone since then. PROS: - Great design. It looks simple and elegant, the the rubber-ish texture feels great, the keys are easy to push, and as crazy as this sounds, I just love the way it flips closed. - Sturdy. It's not made cheap, and you can feel it. I dropped it a couple times over the last 2 years, and not even a scratch. - Great reception. You hear very well, the others hear you well, and I never had any dropped call. - Simple. The menu is simple, the keys are easy to use, the features are easy to use, the screen is easy to read. CONS: - Text messaging format. You can type 140 characters before the message switches to a MMS format. Your friends will receive the message like an attachment, and it annoys me. - Battery life. Even at first, the battery doesn,t last more than a day and a half. I have to recharge the phone every night, or else it will die. But it's been the same since I got it, and 2 years later, I got used to it. - Poor camera. The quality of the pictures is bad. Real bad... NEUTRAL: - Lack of features. It has a calculator, a calendar, and an alarm clock... If you want fancy features, this phone is not for you. Personally, I got a cellphone so I could use it as a phone, not as a toy, and it has never let me down. Overall, it's an awesome basic phone, and great for anyone who doesn't need fancy features. If your not looking for anything fancy, but a durable phone without the high cost, this is the phone for you. I no longer have this phone so i can't give exact details, but this has been my fave phone so far. This phone is EXTREMELY durable. I dropped this phone hundreds of times, jumped in a pool with it in my pocket and left it out in the rain overnight (all i had to do was take out the battery and put it up to a fan for a couple hours to dry it out), got it ran over by vehicles. This phone lasted me another six months after these incidents before the charging part finally kicked out on me, but there aren't many phones out there that can do this at a low cost. Also the keypad is very rubbery so its hard to get used to at first, but when you do, its very easy to text fast. There were a few unfortunate things about it, like some texts would not send the first time (annoying more than anything), and no video camera kinda sucked, but otherwise, great phone and def worth the buy for anyone who is looking for basics (texting, calling, etc).
