Motorola i830 review

RATING

6.2/10
Informr score
The Motorola i830 currently has an Informr score of 6.2 out of 10. This score is based on our evaluation of 67 sources including reviews from users and the web's most trusted critics.

A flip-phone notable for its small size, unusual metallic finish and advanced traveling features. These include A-GPS visual and audible driving directions system, a voice recorder that captures memos and phone conversations for playback later, and International Direct Connect, which provides near-instantaneous digital walkie-talkie connections between users in the United States, Brazil, Argentina and Peru as well as between users in the United States and Canada (Mexico should be added sometime during the Summer of 2004).

The i830's gadget-like appearance fits its high-tech personality. Many recent designs try to appear expensive and sophisticated by mixing low-contrast silvers and greys; the effect usually fails and they end up looking like cheap plastic. Motorola's designers took a different route, choosing to mimic the style of notebook computers by mixing metallic finishes with black plastic. The handset comes in a choice of two color schemes: silver with contrasting black edges, antenna and accents, or bronze with black, which is strikingly different from any other phone on the market -- you will either love it or hate it. The unit is exceptionally small when folded, and the external display, situated near the bottom of the face and surrounded by more black plastic, only reinforces the notebook look.

Advanced features and mini-gadget appearance aside, the Motorola i830 is a run-of-the-mill cellphone and organizer with minimal Web browsing capability and all the usual extras. The 65,000-color screen is easy to read, but this is nothing outstanding for a phone in the US$300 range. The contact book can hold 600 entries -- which is higher than many, less than a few, and probably more than anyone needs -- and the datebook and calendar are adequate, but can't sync with your desktop or PDA software. The provision of GPS sets this phone above many current rivals, and the Profiles feature, which allows the user to adjust a host of settings with a few touches of a button, is a useful addition.

Who will benefit most from owing a Motorola i830? Road warriors who rely on calling more than e-mail, and cross borders routinely. Person-to-person calling and GPS assisted-travel are exceptionally well-supported by this phone. If you can't do your job without e-mail, then a BlackBerry is a better bet. Private individuals who rely on their cellphone for personal use rather than business can probably find another model that does their favorite things better or cheaper. The one exception to this last statement concerns size: if you love or really need a tiny phone, the i830's price might not be too steep.

Stay away from this phone, and for that matter NEXTEL!!!!!

from Amazon
This phone as well as other nextel phones are the worst I have had in a long time; and I have had quite a few phones ... Besides the fact that they are the most "technologically challenged" phones (no sms ! for f*** sake !!!!), they have many stability and battery problems; and yeah .. they look absolutely hideous

The Small Phone Choice for Nextel Customers

I'm surprised by all the bad reviews and that is why I am bothering to write one. I have had this phone for 2 years and purchased the same phone for my mother and sister. Since we are on the Nextel plan for business we were somewhat limited and picked this one because of it's size. I will admit it is terrible for text messaging compared to some of the other phones out there. And it's not built to browse the web etc. But we just wanted a phone not a sidekick or a blackberry. I have had no problems with battery life or pieces falling out or overheating. I'm sure the other reviewers aren't lying, and as Nextel stopped making this phone maybe the model was prone to certain problems but as for the three phones I purchased, none of them had problems with parts, reception or anything else. If you want a small phone for Nextel, I think it's the best way to go. Less

super crap

I brought it in for service 3 times in 3 months. The speakers kept blowing. Not worth looking at. It is a super piece of crap!!!!

Bad battery life

from Amazon
My wife has had this phone for about two years. Loved it at first but soon after she began charging it more and more frequently. Right now she is charging it 2-3 times per day and she doesn't use it often. Her favorite aspect of the phone is its size.

It's a cute phone -- I loved the bronze color and the lightweight feel -- but for God's sake, if I wanted to take a week to get a text message through, I'd write a letter. I really don't know whose bright idea it was to add the unnecessary step of signing on to the 'net to send a message, but it made the whole process about 82 steps longer than it needed to be. Add to that the phone's infamous habit of dropping calls, sticky dialing and flat-out refusal to make a call sometimes and you have a real loser. Too bad. Cute phone, poor execution on Nextel's part. Phone has lots of problems

from Amazon
Have had this phone for a year, the screen to the earpiece fell out. This happened to a co-worker too but Nextel would not fix it without a hefty price. The battery won't keep a charge after a year either. The size and design is good but the problems need to be fixed.

I paid $150 extra plus tax to get a cool looking phone and it was not worth it. I went to the Nextel Support Center near my work to check if there was anything they could do -- nope -- the guy showed me a wall with the discontinued phones and this was the first one displayed. He said that was probably the worst cell phone ever released and everyone is having problems. I bought the service plan and he advised me to call and explain the problems I am having in an attempt to get a new cell phone. Common problems include: call gets dropped, from full bar to no service, and no service in key locations such as my work, my drive to work, and home. BTW, I have other people at work that have nextel service and it works fine so it is definetely my cell phone and not the nextel service. Please save yourself some money and don't buy this cell phone. Less
