The "1-Minute" Review

The Motorola i570 is a rugged clamshell offering that has been released by both Sprint Nextel in the US and Telus Mobility's Mike in Canada.

The i570 is specifically designed for less than ideal environments. It’s a sturdy device that meets military standards for resistance to water, exposure to dust and shock and has an overall heavier feel than other clamshells of similar dimensions.

What the screen lacks in resolution it makes up for in brightness! This phone appears to be designed for people working in the field, and a dusty, wet field at that.

Not many additional bells and whistles on this model, although it does have a 1.3MP camera, complete with 4X digital zoom and the ability to record up to 30 seconds of video (much more if you use additional SD memory). These camera features make sense, since people in the field may have a need to take pictures.

The keyboard layout of the i570 is troubling. Whereas a certain “assumed” universal standard placement of buttons has emerged with most cell phones, the i570 has an awkward layout. The menu button, which is generally found in the center of the directional pad, is instead on the left side of the directional pad. This is even more confusing since on the screen the menu button appears in the middle.

Also, instead of scrolling through icons you have to continuously hit the “more” button in order to see the next row of icons, which is tedious and unnecessary.

While this phone is clearly designed for people working in rugged conditions, people who most likely use their phones almost exclusively to communicate, the i570 nonetheless possesses music player functions. I think this is a mistake. If the goal is to produce a compact, rugged, reliable device, adding a challenging set of music playing features only moves it away from its goal.

The i570 will get the job done, but it will require a small learning curve as you adapt to its odd keypad.

Flip open to a blank screen

I have had my i570 for about a year. Last night I opened it to make a call and the screen is blank. Small window when folded is working, but inside screen is just blank. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I had to purchase another phone. I had an LG before this that wasn't rugged and it took far more abuse then this phone ever would. I would not recommend purchase a Motorola phone as they will not help you in anyway Less

Fantastic

I have just recived this phone on an upgrade and I think it is great!the design is fantastic for a manufacturing enviroment and the buttons are a great sealed rubber pad that holds up well in a dusty enviroment.

A Great Phone!!!

This is a great phone. The out door external display is just what these rugged phones needed. If you are looking for a phone with a camera, video camera, something to play video games on or any of that other BS, this phone is not for you. This is plain and simply just a phone. It has a loud ringer, that can be heard over saws, air tools and machinery. It can be dropped and not break. I've dropped mine, some times I cringe thinking that was really hard and the phone is toast, but to my surprise it always works. I am a contractor, I needed a phone with the push to talk and nothing else. The buttons are easy enough for my big fingers to push. The features the phone has are easy to use. In fact on the scale of 1-10 for features I am going to give this phone a 10. Because I am reviewing a phone and all the features a phone really needs, it has and does them well. I hope this helps people like my self who just want a phone with out all the useless junk Less
