The "1-Minute" Review

For years High Technology Computer Corporation (HTC ) has made phones for other Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) like Microsoft and Audiovox. Recently they decided to proudly produce products under their own name. Horray!

The HTC S720 Libra is a dual-band CDMA smartphone slider that offers up a rich feature set within an attractive housing. When closed, the Libra measures 103x51x19 mm. It features a wonderful 2.4 inch 240x320 pixel QVGA display capable of producing 65,000 colors. The display uses a light sensor to accommodate even viewing despite available light. Below lies a numeric keypad consisting of nine raised, rectangular buttons that are easy to press. The dedicated send and end keys are located on the bottom left and right respectively.

When you slide out the full Qwerty keyboard the display shifts from portrait to landscape revealing a simple three row pad that is uncluttered and easy to tap.

The Libra is packed with a Qualcomm MSM7500, 400MHz processor, placing it among the more powerful phones on the market. Complimenting the processor is 256MB of ROM and 64MB of onboard RAM, expandable of course. The Libra ships with Microsoft Mobile 6.0.

The Libra will allow you all the functionality of a high-end smartphone, including email, texting, viewing documents and surfing the web. It also clocks an impressive talk time of 7.3 hours (228 hours standby).

But the Libra is not all work and no play; included with the device is Windows Media Player to enjoy photos, music and videos, a 2.0MP camera that can shoot pictures and video, and Bluetooth 2.0 so you can be a monster multi-tasker.

Piece of Garbage

Pro: Makes a nice paperweight Con: Shuts itself off daily. Freezes up constantly. This phone is not user friendly. Using experience: 11 months This phone was rushed to market before the bugs were worked out. Very much regret buying this phone. Can't wait till I am up for free upgrade. Looking forward to tossing it out the window.

Not at all Happy with HTC S720 Model

I got this phone a year back , but having trouble with the Battery, even there seems to be a virus problem, some number automatically dials by itself. there is no service centre for HTC, even dealers dont recommend this phone

My text messages arrive a day or two late (even if the phone is on) and the date on the text marks the date I receive it... pretty inconvienent if the message says "let's meet tomorrow"... I've been late MANY times now!... by a few days! Over all, it was a great phone until it went nuts. Less

Con: It takes a while to turn on and off, everything is kind of small and cramped, pictures are difficult Using experience: 5 weeks Despite the cons, I ADORE this phone! My mom had this phone for 4 months before she gave it to me, but it works like a charm. I've been having trouble stopping the ringtones after they start, and it took a while to figure out how to save ringtones[from the text containing it, you assign to contact and then it's officially a ringtone] But other than the minor flaws, I LOOOVE this phone! I had used a windows mobile (pocket pc) for years, but bought another phone two years ago. I picked this HTC S720 phone up a few months back and have been very happy to go back to Windows Mobile. Anyone who's used to this o/s will love this phone. It's very fast, will sync with bluetooth or usb, gets pretty good battery time (two days standby easy after a week of discharge/recharge). The first thing I did was backup my contacts to MS Outlook 2007 using bluetooth, and upgrade the o/s to Windows Mobile 6.1on Telus' website. This phone is very customizable. I have already downloaded an app that makes it look just like Windows Vista, and operate similarly. I have been using it with my windows office excel spreadsheets and it works great. I've also been using it with Word files. Once you sync it to your pc you can copy anything to it by just dragging and dropping. I have added a 4G uSD card and store all my data on it leaving the phones main memory free. Swapping between programs is easy to do with the task manager. This program is also used to shut down apps once you're through using them. If you know how to use windows mobile, or learn it well (it's not hard), you'll never have memory or freezing issues. The screen is very bright, but it's not a tough screen. Oddly enough, it hasn't bothered me because I've found navigating through the software to be intuitive and easy. The 2 Mpixel camera takes great pictures, very clear and bright. This camera supports pictures up to 1200x1600 (no, not 1600x1200). The video recordings I found to be a little dark. You'll want a bright area to make videos in. The e-mail was easy to set up using Telus' software. Browsing has not been a problem. The slide mechanism has been great. I have always treated electronics I own very well, so I don't know how it will stand up to the way some people treat their phones. The qwerty keyboard works well, although why these companies can't use concave keys is hard to understand. Another nice feature is using the micro USB port for charging the phone. You can charge it from your pc or laptop, or use the included ac adapter for a faster charge. You can use the same port for the included earphones or use stereo bluetooth earphones. It also has a car antenna jack. If your car supports this, you can plug it in and use the cars antenna to get even better reception. The only single complaint I have is that the rear cover is a little flimsy. It connects only at the top and bottom, leaving the long sides of the cover no support. They should have made it from aluminum. The only two ways they could really improve this phone would be to make the rear cover stronger and to make the display a touchscreen. Less

Not worth it

I got the phone in Dec. '07 on a contract with Telus, and the reason I chose this phone is cause I thought it was cool. I like it at first, was cool with the slide out keyboard and all the programs in it. After a few months of using it all the time the phone started to freeze up and had to remove the battery to "reboot" it, the media player barely played an entire song (telus said to remove the battery and it resets the media player) that didnt work, then the springs in the slide broke and telus said its cause i was using the slide to much....i thought thats what it was there for but i guess i was wrong. Then the battery wasnt holding its charge and i had a hard time with getting any kind of service. Cause I left my phone in my truck for the weekend when i went camping and the temparute went to 5 degress one night it got "moisture" and the white dots turned red. Because of this "moisture" my warrantee was voided and thats why the phone started to freeze and the springs broke....i know the loisture happened a few months after everything. finally in October '07 i had enough with my phone going from full charge to dead in 15 min so i decided to take the extra year contract and get a Blackberry curve and I must say to anyone who is getting a PDA SmartPhone pocket computer whatever you want to call it....Pass on HTC and go for the Blackberry, I will never get an HTC phone again its not worth it. My friend that still had his "BagPhone" that i laughes at never had any problemes with it and in November '08 he had to get a new phone and he went with a BB on my recomendations and he loves it... In my opinion HTC is a good paper weight and thats what I have on my desk to hold the papers down when i have the window open. Less

I did have the battery replaced about six months ago as it wouldn't keep a charge. It has frozen a few times, but not an issue compared to the features it offers. I find the slideout keyboard easy to use and I really find the sync feature with Outlook a real bonus! I was originally looking for a Blackberry but was recommended this phone instead. I'm glad I listened. There is no such thing as a perfect i-phone, but this comes close for me. Less

The only pros I can think of are : - keyboard -yahoo go application Now for the Cons : - Constantly freezes ( I must reboot the phone 2 times daily minimum) -media player hardly plays a complete song, it just randomly skips to the next one :S -takes crappy videos -has trouble finding service & cannot recieve service outside canada - will not let me hang up a phone call often - keypad does not always respond -I have been on the phone with telus countless times for hours trying to work out issues, especially with texting I have called them on 4 different occaisions b/c my phone was either unable to recieve texts or send them or Both ! -the screws often come loose making it impossible to slide it closed until i find a tiny screwdriver Now they tell me the phone could be defective and they also do not liek to sell them to customers anymore due to all of the issues. I wouldn't reccomend this phone it is a huge pain. Less
