The "1-Minute" Review

Google’s Pixel 3 XL is the latest release in their lineup known for powerful cameras and access to the latest Android features available.

While it shares many of its specifications with its smaller sibling -- the Google Pixel 3 -- there are a few key differences to note.

The first is the display size. Measuring 6.3-inches and sporting a resolution of 1440-by-2960, it offers excellent detail and color reproduction according to reviewers.

However, unlike the smaller Pixel 3, the larger display on the Pixel 3 XL includes a notch at the top to house the dual front-facing cameras. While display notches have been a much-debated issue in 2018, the notch on this phone is particularly large. Reviewers found this frustrating as notifications were often cramped and the notch was harder to ignore when using full-screen applications or streaming video.

The only other difference comes in the battery. The phone includes a beefier 3430mAh battery. While reviewers found that the battery helped keep the phone on par with its smaller sibling, many still wished the battery life was better. Still, it will be enough to last the day during typical use.

Everything else about the phone is identical to the Pixel 3. For more on what to expect in terms of audio, performance, camera quality, and more, consult our Pixel 3 review summary.

What the Critics Are Saying...

What Hi-Fi

The Pixel 3 XL isn’t revolutionary, nor does it offer a giant leap forward from its predecessor. But if you want a big-screen Android phone for taking photos, watching videos and everything else you can do with your phone, there might not be a better option.

The Wirecutter

The XL offers same performance, software, and cameras of the Pixel 3 but has a larger (6.3-inch) display and slightly better battery life.

- Ryan Whitwam, The Wirecutter
GSMArena

The Pixel 3 XL is a mixed bag of ideas and executions. As a showcase of Google's prowess in AI, machine learning and computational photography, it's deeply impressive. Things like Call Screen, Duplex, Super Res Zoom, Top Shot and the upcoming Night Sight are Google at its finest.

T3

Google has undoubtedly improved on the Pixel 2 XL, with a phone that takes better pictures, has a better design, and has a better screen. From the camera and OS perspective, the Pixel 3 XL is hard to beat, and it's right up there as one of the best smartphones you can pick up in 2018.

After using the Pixel 3 XL to its limits, I am convinced that this is the best an Android smartphone can get. The camera performance of Pixel 3 XL is unparalleled making it the best smartphone for casual and even professional photographers. You also get a much improved OLED screen and better audio performance as compared to last year's Pixel phones. The design is more or less similar but the new Pixel phones feel more premium now, and are better at securing your on-device data.
