The "1-Minute" Review

The Blackberry Pearl, also known as the 8100, is the first BlackBerry aimed squarely at consumers. The phone sports a built-in camera, music/video players and a bright 240-by-260 color screen.

Unlike its suit and tie predecessors, the Pearl is very thin and fits nicely into a pocket. Of course there are some tradeoffs. The Pearl ditches the QWERTY keyboard and scroll wheel that made Blackberry famous. In their place are RIM's SureType keyboard, which has two letters on each key, and a trackball navigator similar to that found on the Sidekick.

Pros

- Thin, compact design
- Blackberry push-email
- Clear, bright screen

Cons

- No DRM support
- Keys are very small
- microSD card slot is located behind the battery

I'v had my blackberry Pearl for almost one year now, through telus, and I dislike it .The Buttons are lose and very small. The phone often freezes when trying to make a phone call or trying to use the camera on it. So in order to fix the problem I often have to remove the battery and put in back in.I also had other people tell me that, they had similair problems with their Blackberry Pearl. I would not recomend anyone to buy this phone, at all.

It is noticeably lighter and more petite than its predecessors, and--unlike most BlackBerry devices--it looks remarkably like an ordinary cell phone

None of the new features on the Pearl are earth-shattering; most smart phones have offered music players and cameras for some time. And the phone has rough spots in audio quality and key design. Nonetheless, when you combine its well-executed features with RIM's messaging capabilities and the Pearl's sleek look, this device is a winner.

This sleek cell phone adds a serviceable camera and multimedia features to BlackBerry's already terrific e-mail capabilities.

A few weeks before my birthday my MuchMusic phone of three years had to die, It was a tank I loved it. So for my birthday my loving parents decided to waste 300 on a blackberry pearl. I was so excited. Now both me and my parents hate it. The volume button died on me, it no longer decreases Its slower than my first apple computer in 97 If you want internet, be prepared to make a meal while you wait, it takes about ten minutes All sd chips that i put into my phone die.. are usless in the phone after about a month. the trackball falls out, gets dirty, wont roll I cant remember a time when it did not freeze It drops calls, I get half a text, or i wont get a text at all, it takes forever to send a text out, it calls out on its own my ringer doesnt work half the time, neither does the vibration. and the battery life, if you like music or internet, get a car charger cause it dies about half way through a 12 hour day, I text alot and listen to music, and if im at school texting and listing to music in about five hours it dies. The Gps starts up on its own all the time, everything freezes at first it was great, a little slow at times, i loved it for about a month, then after that I cant stand it, and am stuck with this plan for 3 years. Sure it looks really cool, and if you have tiny fingers its heaven for texting. Their is a flash and has other cool features like msn, yahoo, games you can download and good service. But over all, why waste any of your money on a phone that lasts about a month before you feel like throwing it at a wall and then drowning it in a river. I would rather use an old school phone that looks like a brick and has its own battery pack than this peice of junk. Less

AMAZING!

I love it. That's all there is to say about it. Better for smaller hands though, the texting would be harder I would imagine with bigger fingers, other than that LOVE IT!

1.0 out of 5 stars P.O.S., March 15, 2009 By anonymous - See all my reviews The pearl is one of the, if not the worst, cell phones I have owned in 10 years. Within the first few months: -the trackball was working inconsistently -the red call-end/power button functioned only half the time -the headphone jack stopped working consistently. It takes 10 seconds for the phone to recognize that a headset is plugged it, which sucks when you're in the middle of a call. Sometimes it doesn't work at all. What a P.O.S! The only pro about this phone is that the calendar and contacts sync with my Mac OS. To add insult to injury, T Mobile customer service sucks 8@!!5. They only get good reviews because they sound cheerful on the phone and act like they care. God forbid you experience a real problem--half of them don't know their a55 from their elbow. Tech support takes hours. Literlly! And tech support rarely helps (because of the a55/elbow thing). I thought I hated Cingular/AT&T customer service until I switched to T Mobile. At least at Cingular they don't put on a compassionate facade then dispense crappy service, they just cut straight to the crappy service. Less

This is the worst piece of hardware I have bought. Both my husband and I bought one of these. Both have hardware failures. My phone at exactly 1 year and 3 days experienced several failures, these include: 1) volume increase button failed (No s/w way to control!!!), basically every time I accidentally decrease the volume I have more and more difficult time hearing and eventually will not be able to use the phone. The speaker phone has one bar left and is completely useless now. 2) ear jack no longer works (this is also happening to my husbands phone) Now I can not use the mp3 features, no more music! 3) Can't hear out of phone when phone is against your ear for listening (my husbands phone only). My husbands phone is down to speaker phone only. Reception to others calling is terrible. We are going to buy i-phones with expectations of better hardware! I have found out that others around my job who have or had this version of the blackberry (8100) experienced similar problems. Less
