What the Critics Are Saying...

PCWorld

Overall, the BlackBerry 8700c is an impressive device for e-mail and works well as a cell phone. Too bad its strong business orientation didn't leave room for extras like IM or an integrated camera.

Before purchasing my Rim Blackberry 8700c, I conducted a long review. After that review was completed, it was obvious the 8700c was the one. It has a great overview of step by step guides that will lead you through what you don't understand. The phone is light and very compact. The reception is remarkable. I can be inside a steel or block building and still have all my bars. Some have said that this is just not possible. Well, it is indeed. That is one reason I purchased the 8700c. In closing, if you need a phone that won't break you wallet, has great reception, easy to use, the Rim Blackberry 8700c is the phone to buy. I'm thinking of purchasing another just to have later down the road... Less

Yuck. Do not recommend at all. Less

As this is my 1st BlackBerry, I have nothing to compare it to. However, I previously owned a PalmTreo 650, and I have to say, this phone is 100% better. I had the Palm for less than a month when the camera made the phone completely "clonk" out. Some people don't like that this phone has no camera, however, I believe that would just be one more feature that can ruin a phone. The more external features it has, the easier for one of them to fail, making the entire phone fail. I love every function of this phone, right down to the dimensions. I was actually expecting this phone to be a lot heavier than it is. I love it. If you're considering a smart phone, don't overlook this one. Less

I was unable to open any of the icons, including set up, profiles, applications, calendar, address book, etc. I spent an hour on the line with technical support and they decided that the phone was defective. Not happy with this at all. Makes me wonder about ordering this BlackBerry. I do hope that it's not a sign that I am going to hate this phone. Waiting on replacement phone, hoping it will work 2nd go around. Less

One of the best BlackBerry's ever made, but it has some drawbacks. ++ PROS ++ + One of the brightest BB screens when it was released, the newer Curve and Pearl are brighter still. This thing can be used as an emergency flashlight. + Speakerphone mic has improved, but still isn't comparable to other well known cellular speakerphones. + Additional convenience button features including a new center console and side button which can be manually assigned to often accessed functions. + Battery life is decent, one of the longest lasting BB batteries I've owned. + Spare parts are readily available, too often owners think their phone is broken and end up going back to the cellular store and getting a new one with another / extended commitment with the replacement. Instead, look for the replacement, you can replace everything including the buttons and fascia, you can build an entire BlackBerry out of replacement parts found on the web. -- CONS -- - Can never be jarred, if the phone is dropped just onto a table from your ear while sitting, the SIM card becomes dislodged and the phone enters "SOS" mode, everything but the radio works until you remove the batter and reinsert the SIM card. Blackberry's can take an inordinate amount of time reboot and this can take you off the air and out of your address book for a few minutes. - The screen scratches easily, it can affect the readability of the phone display. It is worth using a screen protector, even clear packing tape is better than nothing. - AT&T EDGE network is just PAINFULLY SLOW, this phone can also be used as a Tethered Modem for your PC, you'll experience ISDN (128 KBs) bandwidth. Sprint and Verizon offer DSL speeds on their networks. - The browser is still a cellphone browser and has problems with sites that contain frames, sites like Amazon have modified special sites when they detect you're using a cell phone web browser, but some sites don't and will take minutes instead of seconds to download. - / + Extreme customization, careful when modifying settings because you can end up losing characteristics or get buried in menus, this can also be considered a positive if you enjoy customizing your phone. - Less

so far, the phonebook is what really win me over this phone, big screen, qwerty keyboard, side scroll buttons, etc. very useful phone especially if you got multiple phone entries for contacts.

I purchased this phone for the full keyboard. That was the only reason. So far it has worked perfectly for me. Just remember that this phone is not an MP3 player, it doesn't have a camera and it doesn't have the ability to share data via bluetooth, but it works great for texting, email, and light surfing. Pro: Typing ease, business features Con: Not the ticket if you're looking for a "fun" phone The BlackBerry 8700 is a full-featured business-oriented PDA that has excellent call clarity and is full of useful features. The e-mail setup is simple and works flawlessly. Contact info synchs easily and is easy to sort and view. I tried about every smartphone out there, including the newer, more consumer-oriented BlackBerry 8800, and this was by far the best keyboard for me. It's a fairly small device, shorter than many, but the keys are well-spaced and have a crisp feel and click when pressed. Typing feel is clearly a personal preference thing, so try out as many devices as possible before committing. For me, this was the hands-down winner. It's also $10 less a month than non-BlackBerry phones with my provider. Less
