8.9/10
Informr score
The Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max currently has an Informr score of 8.9 out of 10. This score is based on our evaluation of 20 sources including reviews from users and the web's most trusted critics.

The Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max is the top-tier model in Apple’s 2019 iPhone lineup. But it shares many similarities with its smaller sibling, the iPhone 11.

Notable differences include:

  • A larger 6.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with HDR10+ support running at 2688-by-1242 pixels
  • An additional 12MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom on the rear camera
  • Improved IP68 water resistance good for submersion in up to 4 meters (13ft) of water
  • Increased storage capacity options up to 512GB
  • A larger 3500mAh battery

If you want the most immersive viewing experience, the iPhone 11 Pro Max is a good choice out of this year’s iPhone lineup. It has improved contrast and color over the standard iPhone 11, increased resolution, and a slightly larger screen. While reviewers found it excellent for reading text it really shines for gaming and watching HD video with its larger display and minimal bezels.

The camera also includes an additional 12MP sensor and telephoto lens, providing up to 2x optical zoom -- something the iPhone 11 cannot do. Reviewers also noticed improved accuracy with the portrait shot modes of the camera thanks to the extra data available from the lens.

The phone’s larger battery allows for all-day battery life with ease and a noticeable boost over the previous iPhone XS Max. In fact, it’s the 2019 iPhone with the longest battery life. However, the iPhone 11 Pro Max also includes an 18-watt charger with the phone -- unlike the iPhone 11-- so charging speeds will be snappier as well.

Finally, there are some subtle design differences. While looks are largely the same as the standard iPhone 11, the rear glass features a matte coating which reviewers liked for its added grip and improved fingerprint- and smudge-resistance. The frame is also stainless steel instead of aluminum adding a slight bit of heft and a more premium feel.

In terms of performance, software, connectivity options, and more, the iPhone 11 lineup is identical. Many reviewers actually recommend the standard iPhone 11 over the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max for most users. While the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max is a very solid performer across all our technical categories and use cases, it doesn’t break any new ground. And while it was ahead of most of the Android models we tested in both Recording and Playback, it is behind both the earlier Apple iPhone XS Max and the Hua...

I get that uniformity is Apple’s schtick, but in this case it actively makes the product worse. Of all the massive phones I’ve used across the years, the heavy, slippery iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone XS Max before it are the only ones to give me serious hand pain. It’s literally a crying shame, becau...

Sure, Apple sells itself – quite successfully – as a premium brand, but that’s a lot of money to spend on any smartphone in 2019. While the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max is a very solid performer across all our technical categories and use cases, it doesn’t break any new ground. And while it was ahead of most of the Android models we tested in both Recording and Playback, it is behind both the earlier Apple iPhone XS Max and the Huawei Mate 20 X. Some of the reasons for that, such as reversed stereo channels when playing music, may be addressed in updates, so the actual performance gap between it and the XS Max may decrease over time.

You can argue the feature sets or philosophical control differences between Android and iOS all you like, and indeed this is the Internet, which was built for such matters. But in sheer price terms, the iPhone 11 Pro Max does not compare all that favourably to the premium Android market.

The true Pro model

The iPhone 11 Pro (Max) is a rock-solid device for users with high demands. We've known the design for a few years, and the fact that it's copied by half the industry doesn't really help. But the latest iPhone combines everything Apple has learned in the past decade and combines it with the latest technology - except for the port.
