How to enter text message?

When I try to text for example, if I want the letter y which is the third letter on the 9 key, I get 3 Www like this instead of the 3rd letter Y.

I cannot send text messages how do i do this

Your text input mode must be set on T9 predictive mode by default. To change it to ABC manual mode try this: press Menu > Messaging > Settings > Text Message > Text Input
